Enjoy a laid-back atmosphere where beautiful Maine Coons roam freely, giving you the chance to unwind, play, and enjoy their calming company. You can arrive early for a meal or simply enjoy nibbles during your visit.

The Nutwood Toy Run began in 2023 with just 50 teddy bears and a simple idea — to bring a little extra joy to children spending time in hospital over Christmas. That first year, a small group of around 20 bikers came together to hand-deliver the toys, and the event has grown ever since.
By 2024, support expanded even further. More biker groups and Land Rover enthusiasts joined the run, and thanks to Tesco Extra in Royston and the wider community, an incredible 23 crates of toys and books were collected. Local businesses also contributed generously, helping us provide a wide range of gifts for children of all ages. With the support of Herts Rural Police, the convoy travelled safely to Lister Hospital.
We chose Lister Hospital because we have a venue in Hertfordshire and our volunteers have personal links to the hospital. If we receive a substantial amount of donations, we plan to split contributions and support other charitable causes as well.
The toys and books delivered are not just for Christmas morning — they help Lister Hospital maintain a supply of comforting gifts for children recovering from operations, receiving treatment throughout the year, or spending time away from home during the festive season. These items offer comfort, distraction, and moments of happiness during difficult times.
In 2026, the Toy Run continues to grow. We now have dedicated volunteers, local schools lining the route to wave the convoy on, and an Amazon Wish List to make donating easier than ever. With even more community partners involved and excitement building, this year’s Toy Run promises to be bigger, brighter, and better — bringing joy to even more young patients when they need it most.
Donations points include Tesco Extra in Royston, The woodman Inn in Nuthampstead and The Pheasant in Great Chishill.

Wednesday 17th February – Duncan Bickley
 
Duncan is a retired Commercial Helicopter Pilot, Instructor, Examiner and Instructor Trainer with over 20 years and 7,500 hours of onshore helicopter flying experience. He ran his own helicopter company based at Cambridge airport for most of his career. He flew sorties that included commercial charter, photography and filming tasks, geographical surveys and critical component delivery. In addition to being a pilot he worked in Merchant Banking, as a DJ, MC, Entertainer and Event Commentator and is also a serial quiz show contestant.

11th November Woodman Talk – Guy Thomas

Bentfield Hucks – pioneer aviator and the early days at Hendon Bentfield Charles Hucks (1884 – 1918) was an aviation pioneer in the early 20th century. As well as test flying numerous aircraft types, he was the first Briton to perform a loop in an aircraft, which he performed in his Blériot at Hendon aerodrome in September 1913. He is also credited with designing the Hucks starter and creating ‘sky writing’ and many feats of test flying whilst working for Airco. The talk covers his short life’s exploits as an engineer, an aviator and as a test pilot, including his connections with Hendon and his early demise from the spanish flu in 1919.

Joseph Merrick, ‘The Elephant Man’

Merrick (wrongly called John in the film) suffered from an incurable disease that blighted his short life, but he became a celebrity towards its end.  His story is a very uplifting one, by turns funny and tragic, and has fascinated people since it was uncovered.  This illustrated talk, by the former County Archivist of both Leicestershire (where Merrick came from) and Hertfordshire, will ‘put the flesh on the bones’ of a gentle man who was forced into public interest through no fault of his own.
